a version in black and white for anton corbijn, whose work i have admired for years. ian curtis, a pure original. i was up all night looking for a trailer for the new anton corbijn movie, "control" about ian. i wanted to pull it back to just the bare bones.

the version recorded in 1984 by elizabeth fraser from the cocteau twins while in this mortal coil has long been a favorite of mine. in fact, it wasn't until years later that i heard tim buckley's original. i tried to bring in a bit of both.

there is no voice like annie lennox. the second and third eurhythmics records were two of the most influential on my musical ear. sweet dreams and touch represent the pinnacle of synth soul 80's. a perfect storm of david stewart's icy synths and drum boxes against the undeniable soul of annie lennox.

i dont know if gillian was making a statement about digital culture, file sharing and the fading of the record industry, but this song is a gorgeous and eloquent commentary about why artists create. i couldnt agree more.

i had every intention of recording imogen heap's 'hide and seek'. then i started messing about with a less obvious arrangement of piano and vocoder. i would still love to see the boys perform a minimally arranged set of their best known material.

i can never decide whose version i love more, dave gahan's or martin gore's. so i tried to blend my favorite bits of both. i confess i was tempted to break one of my rules with this one and add some serious synth backing.
